Take Advantage of 2010 Union Scholarships![]() Did you know that you and your children may be eligible for thousands of dollars in union scholarships for 2010? If you are a Local 1546 member, or a child of a member, who will be attending college in the fall of 2010, consider applying for one or more of the union scholarships available to you. For more information regarding any of the 2010 scholarship opportunities listed below, check your union bulletin board at work, your State of the Union newsletter, or contact your Union Representative.
Local 1546 awards ten scholarships each academic year to members or their dependents who qualify. Four $1,000 awards each are given to applicants who demonstrate outstanding achievements in the areas of grades and participation in school activities and community service. In addition, applicants will be asked to write an essay or complete a project on a labor topic. Six additional $500 awards are given to applicants who qualify and are selected in a random drawing. Winners of the previous year are ineligible. Applications must be submitted by May 5, 2010. To download an application and scholarship rules and information, click here. Each year the UFCW awards fourteen scholarships of up to $8,000 each to UFCW members or their unmarried dependents. For the 2010 awards, the UFCW will continue to accept online applications from any student who has graduated from high school, will be graduating in the spring of 2010, or has received their GED. The Chicago Federation of Labor will once again offer the William A. Lee Memorial Scholarship Awards to ten graduating high school students in the Chicago area who are members, or whose parents are members of, a local union affiliated with the CFL, including UFCW Local 1546. The CFL will offer five academic-based scholarships and five random-drawing scholarships, each in the amount of $2,000. Students may only submit applications for one of the two categories.
