Why Politics MattersIt’s certainly true that countless people – many of our Local 1546 members among them – have little or no interest in politics. And it’s not hard to understand why. Politics is a tough business; it’s complex, time-consuming, and can be downright brutal. But the fact is, it’s the only means to an end that is, or should be, vitally important to all of us: policy and law.
The laws passed by our legislators and the policy set forth by our administration affect every aspect of our lives including:
All of these issues, and so many others, are determined in large part by our elected officials.
As a Local 1546 member, one way you can get involved in the political process is by joining your Union’s Active Ballot Club. It’s an important way to start… but it is only a start.
With what we were able to accomplish in the last Presidential election as inspiration, it is clear that this Labor Movement has the power to change lives through the political process. We have the power… now we must show that we have the will to put that power to use. It will take all of us – in solidarity – to make it happen. That’s why Local 1546 Reps. will continue to come to those of you who have not yet signed up for ABC, encouraging you to do so. We will continue to ask for your help with campaigns to elect labor-friendly candidates; we will keep asking you to write letters, make phone calls, and attend rallies. We will not stop talking about – and writing about – the importance of political involvement… until we get the job done. And the truth is, in the world of politics, the job is never done. Keeping the right people in office and passing the legislation that will uplift, rather than crush, the lives of the working families who built this nation is an ongoing fight.
Please join us in this fight. It’s all about making your life better… but we can’t do it without you. To learn more about the issues important to working families, go to www.myufcw.org. |
